Every GameCube Controller Nintendo Ever Made. The ‘GameCube Controller Super Smash Bros. Edition' will be the 24th (black) and 25th (white) varieties of Nintendo manufactured gamepad that's compatible with the GameCube since its debut on September 14, 2001.

A common downside of emulation on PC is that actually using your controllers requires some extra footwork. This is especially problematic when PC gamepads like the Xbox One controller just don't translate smoothly to playing something like GameCube games on Dolphin. Fortunately, using real GameCube controllers with Dolphin isn't too tough, and we're more than happy to walk you through the process.

What You'll Need

  • A Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter, either Nintendo's official product or Mayflash's third-party version. Both will work identically for this guide, but the Mayflash version must be switched to Wii U mode.
  • A real Nintendo GameCube controller
  • A 64-bit version of Windows
  • Two open USB 2.0+ ports

Unfortunately, you'll probably need to buy something to follow this guide properly. The launch of Smash Brothers for Wii U introduced a Wii U GameCube Controller adapter, which Dolphin developers were quickly able to make compatible with their emulator. Before following the rest of this guide, be sure that you have the list of requirements above completely met.

Using Zadig To Replace The Driver

Start by downloading and installing Zadig, which you can find here. Zadig is a utility that allows you to modify drivers for the USB devices that you're using. In this case we'll be replacing Windows' default driver for our GameCube adapter with one that Dolphin can read properly. Don't worry, this will only change how your PC recognizes the adapter, and it will still work as intended with the Wii U.

1. Once you launch Zadig, you'll see a blank screen like this one.

2. Click 'Options,' then select 'List All Devices.'

3. Now, click the dropdown and select WUP-028.

4. After you've selected WUP-028, verify that your USB ID is '057E 0337,' as pictured below. If it isn't, you may need to restart your PC and re-connect your device in a different USB port.

5. If everything lines up, make sure you have the WinUSB driver selected, then click 'Replace Driver' to replace the driver. Your Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter will now be recognized in Dolphin!

Using The GameCube Controller In Dolphin

1. Go ahead and open Dolphin.

2. Click Controllers.

3. Click the Port 1 dropdown under GameCube Controllers.

4. Go ahead and select 'GameCube Adapter For Wii U.' Note that this will correspond to the port your actual controller is plugged into on the adapter.

A quick way to verify that Dolphin recognizes your adapter is to click 'Configure' to the right of the dropdown.

If you get a tiny popup that says 'Adapter Detected,' congratulations. Your controller should work fine!

If you don't get this confirmation, you didn't follow this guide properly. Retry the guide according to our instructions or comment below and we'll help you.

The Definitive Guide to Gaming on PC

Have you ever wanted to play games on your PC, but are not sure if your PC is up to the mark? This Definitive Guide to Gaming on PC ebook teaches you all you need to know to start gaming on your PC.

So you have your copy of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for your Nintendo Switch, but you want to relive the glory days of Melee? Or do you just prefer the feel of the GameCube or WaveBird controller over the Switch's Pro Controller? No problem! You can definitely still use any old GameCube controllers you have with your Nintendo Switch, and it's a simple process.

  • Adapt the old into the new: Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter ($20 at Amazon)
  • What's old is new again: PowerA Wireless GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch ($42 at Amazon)

How to connect your GameCube controller to your Nintendo Switch

Since the adapter must always be plugged in to use an old GameCube controller or even a new one like the ones by PowerA, it'll always pop up as a USB controller. This includes using wireless options.

You also need to make sure that your Nintendo Switch console is updated to the latest firmware. Nintendo added support for GameCube style controllers in system version 5.0.0 and higher.

  1. Plug your adapter into the USB port on the Nintendo Switch Dock.
  2. Connect your GameCube controller to an available port on the GameCube Controller Adapter.
  3. Turn the controller on.
  4. Go to the Controller tab on the home screen, next to the settings.

  5. Select Change Grip/Order, which is the first option to appear in the Controller Settings.

  6. Click the left and right buttons on your GameCube controller to connect it to the Switch.

  7. Once it connects, it shows up as a USB controller.

With this method, you'll be able to play any Pro Controller-compatible Switch game with a GameCube controller instead. However, it's important to keep in mind that GameCube controllers don't have all of the same buttons as the Pro Controller, so it may not be optimal for certain games.

The GameCube controller will work great with simpler games, such as Mario Kart or Sonic. However, it does excel with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as many fans played Super Smash Bros. Melee on the GameCube, so this makes them feel right at home.
